Design by Committee (was OSD)

Something that hasn't really been talked about in our discussion on
open source design is the fact that by advocating open source design,
you are basically advocating design by committee. A group of people
instead of one person will provide the vision and direction for a
product.

My open questions are: Is this a bad thing? Have we moved into an era
when individual designers matter less?

That was a good article. It was enlightning about future trends in mobile phones and computing. Also it is becoming more and more evident that the future trends in mobile will shift from more technlology to usefulness of the products as well as how can it catch and bring up subtleties in human behaviour and relationships.

Project tasks - estimating

Hi,

Perhaps it would be helpful to all if we all agreed on a standard task list
that we could all use for estimating on jobs. Obviously each project has
it's variables, but broadly speaking, our tasks are the same. So - here's a
short generic list to be added to with your help, so that we can all use it
as a reference in the future.

Evaluating awareness [was: Measuring awareness....]

Guys, I'm not looking for a system. I'm looking for methods to evaluate
these systems. I have some ideas, but as I stated earlier, I'm looking
for methods to evaluate...

I've done some preliminary research into CMC evaluation, effective
computing evaluation, and situational awareness evaluation.

A few high-level questions we want to answer:
• Is it meaningful?
• Does it have an impact on the awareness (moreso than w/o the system)?
• How many levels are appropriate for communicating awareness (e.g.

Measuring awareness....

Okay, I'm working on an experimental project and am looking for ideas
for evaluation. I have a couple already, but don't feel like I've found
that major breakthrough yet. So, I'm looking for some ideas and
inspirations.

Here's a little background (email me off-list if you need more):

The system will be installed in the workplace. The goal of the system
is to create awareness w/in cubeville (fatfarms, dilbertville - take
your pick). There will be two participants. The participants'
workspaces will be "monitored" via a combination of sensors (primary
being video).
