Just a general reminder that attachments are not allowed according to the
Guidelines for use of this list
(http://interactiondesigners.com/discussGuidelines.html).

And I quote:

Email Attachments and Format

Emails sent to the list can be in plain text or HTML format. Emails should
not contain any attachments. Should a user want to reference an image,
sound, or document, that file should be placed online and referenced in the
mail for optional downloading.

Question: Numerical ranges in form inputs

All,

I'm working on a web form which allows the user to enter a 1) single number or 2) range of numbers in a text input field.

Problem: I need to communicate to the user that a range is allowed within this text input field (e.g. 1-4; 5,6,7). There may be more than one field on the page where the user can enter a range.

Does anyone have any supported research with labeling such fields in a way that is immediately clear for the user?

DIS Dinner

The Designing Interactive Systems (DIS) conference (
http://www.sigchi.org/DIS2004/ ) is in two weeks and since this is
probably THE interaction design conference, some of us thought it might
be good to have an IxD List dinner on Sunday night August 1 before the
conference starts.

Remote Control

I have been testing a touch screen remote (Marantz/Phillips) as part of my
research. Of the 100+ people that have done my experiments, only about 10
of them did not find divided attention an issue. They get very absrobed in
the small touch screen and have to be prompted to look at the TV screen to
do part of the task (setting VCR clock via on-screen menu).

However, the remote is very versatile if you have a lot of devices (eg home
theatre), especially high end devices with a lot of options.

Fw: IxD design spaces

The toys, music, sticky notes, coloured markers, whiteboards etc. are all
absolutely necessary. Myself, I've found foam toys indispensable ...
wonderful projectiles that can help you get the attention of those in the
workspaces around you without permanently injuring them ...

But seriously, having said that, I wish I had more time to contribute to
this discussion. In brief, I've mentioned some resources below that are
proving useful for our MIS group as we try to make case for mobile
furniture.

Microsoft TV Remote Control

Hey folks,

I have some questions which I would like to discuss about the Microsoft Media
Center Remote Control (see the attached picture, also in the article).

Personally I find this Remote Control not optimal for a TV/Web experience,
and think it could definately be better designed from a Interaction design
aspect, but also improved ergonomics/usability.
Has anyone used this remote control?

conferencing software - interactive prototyping

Cross-posting apologies.

What would be a good solution for lo-fi prototyping while in a phone
conference?

I'd like something that
- those at the other end of the phone can see changes as I make
them
- simply draws boxes and text, nothing hugely fancy - fast, simple
is key
- allows easy hyperlinking objects
- could export to some sort of flat document that explicitly
itemizes all the implicit linking (i.e.

address books & calendars

This might be considered off topic, but let me phrase it this way:

>From an IxD perspective, what is the best PC-based address book?
Particularly if you want to share between 2 or 3 people, on computers at
home and work, and on a Palm or two... and you want to be able to generate
mailing lists as well as send emails.

(Background: I'm finally resolving to find a systematic solution, after
maintaining a Mac almost exclusively to keep a program called InTouch
running for names & addresses etc, and another one called CalendarMaker for
making simple printable calendars.
