Usability Budgets

Hello there,

I need some stats on the budgets allocated to the interaction design/
usability process in a typical project (Online application/ Software).
What percentage do the big guys spend on usability/Interaction Design/ in
comparison to the cost of developing the entire product.

Links to any such studies/ statistics would be really helpful.

Warm Regards,
Sunit

³ Cellphone, yes! Wallet, yes! Keys, no! ²

Isn't it better when machines do the dirty work for us homo sapiens:

Smart fabrics make for enhanced living

To make a bag that prevents people forgetting things, Nanda and Cable have
equipped a module with a radio antenna and receiver. The unit is programmed
to listen for signals from radio frequency identification (RFID) tags on
objects like cellphones, keys and wallets.

A sensor module in the bag¹s handle detects when the bag has been picked up,
indicating that the owner might be leaving.

Design survey: ideas & your portfolio

Hi Folks, I'm doing a survey for my postgrad studies. The aim is to answer
the following question:

How many of your ideas make it into your portfolio, ie become real pieces
of work you can point to when applying for a job or pitching a client?

1. About a third or less.
2. About half or less.
3. About two thirds.
4. More than two thirds.

I'd be most grateful if you could take a few seconds to complete my online
survey at

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=82465672930

There is only one question.

Touchscreen Question

I'm working on a touchscreen UI application at the moment, and as many
of you know, such interfaces present pretty interesting challenges.
This project is especially interesting in its complexity; it deals with
pretty vertical domain knowledge and its users need extremely flexible
and freeform methods of interaction with the kiosk...tons of buttons,
which certainly creates rather interesting issues of screen real estate
at 1024x768. ;-)

Naturally, this had made me very aware of touchscreen UI's I've used
recently.

File systems.

Hi,

Does anyone have any information (or know where I could some) —
research data etc. — how well the average user (consumer) understands
the hierarchal folder based filing systems implemented into OSs at
present?

My suspicion (through observing people in various types of research) is
that while hierarchal files and folders are familiar and therefore easy
they relate to it, they're really 'understood'.

Interaction Design, should it be a part ofProduct Management or Development? (Was should interaction designersproduce code...)

Yup, u b right ... But ...

I think that there is definitely a trend to be moving in this direction.
This can't just happen. We have to earn our stripes and we need to work with
the best allies we can find in the organization.
