Why do you attend (or not attend) CHI?

The fact that we have close to 20 people interested in dinner on Monday
brought up an interesting question for me. As a one of the few
practitioners (as opposed to corporate research or academia) on the CHI
conference committee for two different years now, one of the things that
is always a struggle is the balancing of needs across several groups.
There have long been complaints that CHI is "too academic" etc. So, my
question is, what things, to you as an interaction designer, does CHI do
well or not well? Why do you come to the conference or why do you avoid
it?

Best practices for navigating page-to-page in search results?

Apologies for the cross-posting.

Does anyone have any research-based best practices for page-to-page
navigation widgets, specifically for navigating among search results pages?
There does not appear to be a de facto standard, to wit:

508 compliance for online forms

We develop a web application which is used by government users, as such it
is 508 compliant...

According to 508 checkpoint 10.4, text boxes should be filled with text,
advising the user how to fill the text box
For example a search text box will present "Enter Search Terms" (see
http://www.us.gov/)

My hesitation is about combo box (drop down lists). Until now I've always
presented a default value in the combo box and it still seems to be the
right way. Is it a problem for reading-aid tools? I don't know.

Self-configuring interfaces?

Hi All,

I was struck by the following quote in a Discover article about self-configuring modular robots ( http://www.discover.com/issues/apr-05/departments/emerging-technology/ ).

"But the big win from self-assembly is adapting to changing demands and environments-in particular, addressing situations and tasks that the robot designer doesn't even know about at the time of construction."

This brought to mind Cognitive Work Analysis and Ecological Interface Design's system-constraint-based approach
