IXDGer's in London September 6&7

If anybody is interested in getting together in London
proper for an IXDG F2F above and beyond the MEXers,
let me know. We can include everybody. I'm there from
September 3-September 7.

Also, if there can be suggestions for a place to meet
that would be great.

MEX in London September 6&7

Is anybody going to MEX (Mobile User Experience?) conference in London?

If so, I'd be interested in doing an adhoc F2F Wednesday evening in a pub.

Silicon Valley First Friday is now Second Friday

Hi folks,

Once again the first Friday of the month lands on a holiday weekend. So I
think it's better to permanently move our user experience designer happy
hour to the second Friday of the month. Less alliterative, but more
functional.

Stay tuned for details about a get-together on the 9th. In the meantime, I'm
looking for suggestions about other places we can get together in the
Sunnyvale/Mountain View, as well as San Jose area, so we can rotate
locations. If you've got a spot that you think would be good, let me know.

The Role of the Page in Web 2.0

I've been mulling this over for a while. "Page" as a metaphor for an
html file works perfectly well when what is being displayed is fairly
static (even if served up dynamically). But now with all the AJAX/
Flash/Flex Web 2.0 stuff starting to take off, what happens to the
humble page? Clearly the metaphor isn't as valid anymore, but what
(if anything) should replace it? Screen?

Once pages (screens? cells? slides?) start updating dynamically,
either on their own or based on user input, we're going to get a lot
of confused users, I'm guessing.

Re-selection of a tab in web app.

Hi,

I'm in the process of designing a web application with a top "bar" that
includes tabs, each leading to a different section/module of the
application (which then has a side bar with more options).

After the user clicked on one of the items in the top bar and continued
working (including going into other pages in that section), is there a
reason NOT to let her click again on the same item and go back to the
first page of that section?

Hi List

Nielsen's most recent article on useit.com recommends that all non web
documents should be opened in a new window.

I was wondering if anyone had any comments on what he's written?

another training question

Where can I find training that can train an experienced software architect/product manager person into an interaction designer. I am looking for something that can give them a thorough background on the fundamentals of user centered design, usability testing, more awareness of usability issues, etc..I am looking for a short training course that can serve as an intro.

this person is pretty acute in terms of user experience and they've done components of UX, but it's always been more from either a developer implementation or writing specs as a product manager.

Usability testing training

Can anybody recommend usability testing training that they have found useful? I am looking for something that can be done in a short time basis, as opposed to a class over several week.

Also, if there's something in NC that somebody can recommend that is over time, that'd work too.
