Auto-forwarding of Cursor

We've been having a friendly discussion at work about using a script to
advance the users cursor in a web form when we have a text box with an entry
of denfinate length, such as a phone number or Social Security Number.
(Sorry to be US-centric, but it's a form for U.S. residents.) Both of these
controls are implemented as three separate boxes.

I'm not a fan of this, as I feel it makes it difficult for the user to keep
track of where the cursor is whether they are advancing with the tab key or
their mouse, and it can only be done on a minority of fields.

Nikkei Shaken By HCI Errors

http://tinyurl.com/b6z9y

"The trouble began Thursday morning, when a trader at
Mizuho Securities tried to sell 610,000 shares at 1
yen (less than a penny) apiece of a job recruiting
firm called J-Com Co., which was having its public
debut on the exchange.

It had actually intended to sell 1 share at 610,000
yen ($5,041).

Worse still, the number of shares in Mizuho's order
was 41 times the number of J-Com's outstanding shares,
but the Tokyo Stock Exchange processed the order
anyway.

Mizuho says another trader tried to cancel the order
three times,

Where Have All The Single-Function Devices Gone?
Today's cell phones can play MP3s, and the newest MP3 players can play
video and view photos. PDAs roll numerous productivity and
entertainment functions into one handheld device: email, calendar,
voice, camera, music, and video.

JOB: Interaction Designer/Information Architect at Apples To Oranges (SF Bay Area/FT & contract)

Interaction Designer/Information Architect

You love users. You have a passion for making the user experience as easy and as useful as possible. You're tired of 90% of the web that is difficult and confusing and, with just a little thought and user testing, could be so much better. You believe people just need to use things, not learn them.

Apples To Oranges, a San Francisco Bay Area web consultancy firm, is looking for an Interaction Designer and Information Architect to drive the development of our online applications and website projects.

CFP: CHI 2006 Work-in-Progress

(Apologies for cross-posting)

This year marks the introduction of the Work-in-Progress venue.
Work-in-Progress submissions provide an opportunity for both
practitioners and researchers to present a concise report of new
findings or other types of innovative or thought-provoking work relevant
to the HCI community.

Like interactive posters of the past, Work-in-Progress focuses more on
visual presentation and discussion between the author and attendees
around the poster.

dashboards

Howdy,

We have been working on a portal type application and have the notion of a
customizable dashboard. So far in usability testing 6 out of 6 users have no
idea why we have a page call dashboard. It doesn't quite seem a problem
in function, but in metaphor.

Has anyone had this type of feedback?
