Online Newspapers as Wikis

Hi guys,

Long time lurker but first time poster. I'm usually a bit too shy to
post but I'd really love to hear people's opinions on a project I'm
working on at the moment.

The main concept of the project is to foster involvement of the
general public in the daily news cycle, and ultimately to improve the
print edition of newspapers through a combination of reader
participation and traditional journalism.

IxD Role Models

My friends and I have been discussing who in the world might be among
the best of the best Interaction Designers. Realizing that means a
world of things...

Which Interaction Designers (friends, co-workers, colleagues) do you
most admire, and why?

Entering State Abbreviations

What is the best way to to capture a state abbreviation in an Ajax "overlay"
(popup window).

In Does User Annoyance Matter?<http://www.useit.com/alertbox/annoyances.html>,
Jakob Nielsen writes that based on his research, it's best to allow users to
type in the two state characters instead of requiring users to manipulate a
drop-down menu for various reasons (see article).

This works well if you also collect zip code information for validation
purposes but in my case, we don't need the zip code, just the state.

Thus,

JOB: Interaction Designer - Mountain View, CA - Affinity Circles - Full Time

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to hire an interaction designer. Regarding the recent
discussions about a lack of positions for people entering this field,
I am open to hiring someone who is early in their design career. I am
primarily looking for someone who has a good design intuition,
empathy for the user and can work in a very fast-paced startup. We
use an Agile development process, so while we use personas, do user
research and usability testing, it might not be in the way you are
used to. So we are looking for someone who is flexible and willing to
adapt.

Expression Blend a "review"

I put review in quotes b/c well, I didn't look at the entire application and
review everything it can do. What I did do was report back on my training
experience I recently went through as part of a project I'm working on.

It is a bit long to post directly to the list, but I know that some people
are interested in Blend but haven't made the plunge yet.

Summary: don't tread lightly ... This is not an application for the faint of
heart. It is a powerful pre-programming tool and when used with Visual
Studio and a great architect can be very good.

Don't Be Too Innovative with Your UI...

...so claims Rich Skrenta, founder of Topix.

"People don't lean forward and squint at web pages to figure out how
they work anymore. They instantly recognize -- within 100
milliseconds -- which class of site a page belong to -- search
result, retail browse, blog, newspaper, spam site, message board,
etc. And if they don't recognize what kind of page they're on, they
generally give up and hit the back button.

Our news pages didn't conform to any standard metaphor. Some people
thought they were search results.
