Label alignment left or right?/Button alignment

Sylvania wrote:

Which OS(es) are you targeting?
On Windows, the general guideline is to left-align labels; on Mac,
labels should be right-aligned. These are guidelines, of course, and not
hard-set rules, but software tends to look more polished when it follows
the visual styles of the OS on which it runs.

Here's my question:
On a similar topic, what about buttons? Apple guidelines say to right
align the function that is mostly used (unless it is going to cause the
user to lose all their work), but on Windows it's the opposite.

Search on a content site

Is it good practice to display Search as a prominent function on a Blogging
I'm of the opinion that search should be tucked away in a corner for users
who really want to use it, as I feel that most users would tend to browse
and not search on this site.
Are there any rules regarding the display of the Search function?

International Visits: Meet Susan Dray

Pam Migliore wrote to the ixdg list with a query (below) about international
customer visits. I've had the pleasure of knowing Susan Dray and David
Siegel of Dray & Associates for nearly twenty years. They are incredibly
experienced with international usability research and have been teaching
about it at CHI and UPA for as long as I know them.

Label alignment left or right?

I have a problem at the definition of the layout guideline of our software
company (software is a desktop application and not a web forms). In many
discussions it is said that the right alignment is a good alternative to
vertical positioning of labels. But in some cases left-alignment labels are
better structured (if I use multiple columns). It is said likewise that the
consistence in the complete application is very important.

My question: Can I use a mixture of both in the applictation layout?

And if not, what is the best standard

Thanx in advance
