New pattern library site: ui-patterns.com

Just passing this along for reference. I'm not affiliated with the site, but
I like what I've seen so far–especially the clean, simple design of the site

FWIW, I saw this referenced from Smashing Magazine, yet another site I'm not
affiliated with but find to be a pretty nice resource.

Phone pad question ...

This may be an odd question ...

I have mentioned in an earlier post about designing a telecommunications
application, and localization.

You all know how the phone dial pad has letters associated with the number?
For instance, 2 is ABC, 3 is DEF, etc. How is this done in other
languages? For instance, Spanish has 2 extra letters than the english
alphabet, the "ñ" and double L "ll" are they on the spanish phones?

Local leaders dinner @ interaction08

Hi all

In the invitation from the IxDA Board to the Local groups Task Force a
couple of weeks ago we also invited all active local leaders coming to
our conference in Savannah to join us for a dinner on Friday night.
So far we're 14 people going.

We're planning to have a 3-4hr event to socialize, exchange ideas and
to talk about your needs and the things to come.

Please RSVP to either me and/or Josh (joshseiden(at)yahoo.com) before
Wednesday this week.

All the best!

How to sell good software

On a more positive note. How to sell software, which is not crappy (this is
for business customers).

1. Make software, which is needed.
2. Offer trial periods.
3. Offer *long enough* money back guarantee (what is "long enough" depends;
how about six months for enterprise software?).

This technique would not necessarily work to ensure software quality for
large environment - too much time and effort would have to be invested in
the deployment and learning, and that by itself creates buy-in for the
crappy software.

Differnce between user interface andinteractiondesign?

> So in that sense they are a truly UI designer.

I dunno, that sounds like a visual designer to me -- which, in my mind, is someone who's able to skillfully adapt the craft of graphic design for an online medium.

[Plug] Mental Models: Getting Into Your Customer's Head

*Speaking of mental models etc...*

Check out UIE's virtual seminar:
Mental Models: Getting Into Your Customer's Head

When it comes to your users, do you really know what they want? Is your team
struggling to agree on a common design because everyone has a different
opinion about what's right?
