Mobile security vs. ease-of-use

2009/4/16 Erik Wingren <ixda at interactivism.com>:

> 1. What is your thinking/point-of-view on application-level security requirements for a mobile app, where one of its' features is to store personal, potentially sensitive data, when the app runs on a mobile device that already has built-in security layers at the OS-level?

It depends.

Sixth sense from MIT labs

Just wanted to share this talk from Pattie Maes @ MIT. She takes
interaction with our environment to a whole new level. A fantastic
watch and certainly game-changing technology.

JAWS demo mode -- free!

Folks, I apologize if this is old news, but I only just discovered: you
can run the JAWS screen reader software in demo mode for free. (MAGic
and OpenBook offer a demo mode as well.) There's no expiration to the
trial, but you can only use JAWS for 40 minutes at a time when you're in
demo mode. Still, you can't beat free, and no amount of speculation or
adherence to best practices replaces using assistive technology
yourself.

Design Thinking and The Black Swan

Design thinking is about creating a narrative of activity, or of
modeling a behavior and designing solutions that will ensure the
expected or anticipated behavior. We typically find ourselves telling
a story of how someone experiences or interacts with a physical device
or service. Much of what design encompasses is narrative.

I have recently been reading The Black Swan by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
and the implications this has on design thinking is striking.

Product Planner: users flows for popular sites

I thought this was an interesting site. It's a crowdsourced tool for
documenting interaction flows for popular web sites. I do this all the time
when doing research for similar features on my products. This could be a
good tool to help reduce that work.

Checkout Best Practices

I like the idea of showing checkout button as a persistent navigation.
This helps user in finding the button easily and quickly.
harryanddavid.com has used this very well, the checkout tray showing
zero items or number of items may pursue users to buy more items.

Round-up of remote usability testing systems

Hiya folks,

Firstly, thanks to those who contributed to two recent threads here
about remote usability testing systems! I happen to be shopping for a
solution myself, and so I did a big round-up of the offerings that I
could discover. See: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pc-NAeDLmYFveCRlIejNuFA

On a high-level, there is the asynchronous, unmoderated, remote
system, available for a wide range of prices.
