Should Interaction Design control/influence user behavior?

Since behavior is the name of the game for us, how much influence do you
think we should have on it? Is it simply something we should re-enforce, or
are we allowed to take it a step farther and introduce new behaviors? This
has been a question that has been rolling around in my head ever since I was
introduced to Interaction Design and User Experience.

Some claim there is an ethical issue that arises any time someone tries to
influence another with or without their consent.

Ungraceful degradation of HTML emails and conversion rates.

Hi everyone,

I'm currently doing a bit of desk research on HTML email, and I've been
really unimpressed with how many sites use templates that degrade very
ungracefully when images are turned off. I'm wondering if anyone has any
stats on the proportion of users who have images turned off by default, or
any stats on the proportion of users who click "display images below" (etc)
to reveal them.

What I'm really interested in is the impact on conversion rates.

Specific kind of faceted search example?

It's hard to tell without the specifics, but this might be similar to
your challenge: http://www.tigerdirect.com. A good example of how they
deal with filters is to go down the path of browsing for hard drives.
You can keep adding filters by clicking on items in the left rail/
navigation area. As you get deeper in, they start to construct a
breadcrumb trail of filters you've added. I wouldn't say it's a great
experience, but they've made an attempt at handling some of the things
it sounds like you are dealing with.

[Job] Software Tutorial Video Production, McGraw-Hill NYC, Contract

Our UX team is looking for someone to create some short
tutorial videos for an online application that we have developed.
I'm hoping someone here is interested in the gig or can refer someone good that they've used.

These tutorials would be standard screen-capture with voice-over
videos, very much like the type found on lynda.com (we may or may not
require you to provide the voice-over talent). We are doing most of the
scripting and storyboarding in-house but require someone to do the
actual production work.

How does your product team interact with your marketing team?

Hey folks,

I'm curious to know how marketing teams and product teams interact in other
companies. For example, who is in charge of the brand and look-and-feel? How
is collateral designed? Is there a separation between the two teams, or is
it all very seamless? Who makes key UI decisions?

PLUG: "Card Sorting" by Donna Spencer

Hello; I'd like to get the word out that Donna Spencer's new book *Card
Sorting: Designing Usable Categories *is now available! You can purchase
it directly from Rosenfeld Media in paperback and digital formats (
http://www.rosenfeldmedia.com/books/cardsorting/ ); IxDA folks can use code
IXDA to take a 20% discount. It's also available via Amazon.com.

It's probably fair to say that we've all heard of card sorting--and that
many user experience people have first-hand experience with it.
