Video usability - chapter headers / timecodes?

I've designed a video player / page for a client's website which includes
chaptering, showing the timecodes for each chapter and a brief description
of what happens at that point in the video.
Nothing too revolutionary, Google Video's been doing it for ages, as have
many others.

Being an ultraconservative client who doesn't have a lot of web experience,
they've asked for user research / usability "best practices" / other
examples in order to make their decision.

Does anyone know of anything I could point to?

Does anyone know of any good UK based UserExperience (UX)/User Centred Design (UCD)/ InformationArchitecture (IA) training?

Tom -

I do run courses on UCD and UX, but mostly within organisations or at
conferences. Assuming that you don't want to travel to Atlanta, Georgia
for next year's CHI conference, you should find a number of good courses
at the UPA conference in Munich in May (the first time outside of North
America, ever). I've got a couple of courses at both conference, but
like I said, there will be many others to choose from.

Getting familiar witih Adobe AIR

I have about a week to figure out if Adobe AIR is a potential tool for
a new web portal I'm developing. I'm hoping it is, I'm looking
forward to using it.

For those of you who are familiar with it, do you think the best way
to get to know it is to set it up (I have no project funding yet but
I could do this at home), to read some of the "bibles" or are there
any good urls you know of? Being that I don't have a lot of time to
figure it out and then sell it, I'm looking for a good overview type
understanding but one with some depth.

Soundex usability results?

It's "me with another weird question" time...

One of our applications has a very telephone book-like UI. I've
suggested that searching in this application be enhanced to use
Soundex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundex) so that users will not
have to know if someone in the database is "Alan Brown", "Allan
Brown", "Allen Brown", etc.

The question I'm now trying to figure out is whether soundex should be
used all the time or whether it should only be invoked if there is no
exact match.

JOB: User Experience Designer - Falls Church, VA and Durham, NC - Viget Labs (Fulltime)

Viget Labs is a full-service web consulting and development firm
headquartered in Falls Church, VA with an office in Durham, NC.
We've been at it since 1999 and have earned a solid reputation as a
rare firm that does both great design and development work when
building award-winning web sites. We work with early-stage web
start-ups (e.g, Squidoo, Odeo, RateItAll, and a few we can't talk
about yet), as well as mature businesses (e.g., Choice Hotels and
Sodexo) and non-profits (e.g., National Geographic, PBS, EarthEcho).

Standard message display time

hello, all,

is there a standard formula for determining length of time a message
overlay should display, e.g. 1 sec/word?

so that if you have a message overlay that automatically shows up on
screen load:
"Click on the green play button to start reading"
how long should you wait to fade it out?

thanks for your advice,
