Why The Apple iPad Will Disappoint (The Obama Effect)

Sent to you by jtang via Google Reader: Why The Apple iPad Will
Disappoint (The Obama Effect) via John Battelle's Searchblog on 1/27/10

(image ) While the world watches the next coming of Jobs, I reflected
on my gut feeling as to the iPad, and why that feeling is inherently
one of disappointment (see my predictions 2010 (#5) and my post earlier
this week).

And I'll admit, this one is not entirely logical. But then again, I
don't always base my predictions (or my business decisions) on pure
logic. Sometimes I just go with a feeling.

So what is my feeling about the iPad?

Driving users to register...

Is there any general research or opinion out there when it comes to
driving users to register on a general information site?

For instance, is it better to "tease" content by offering one
recipe or advice column to give users a taste, and then to lock the
rest behind registration?

My concern is that 1) people won't register if they know they can
get the information for free on other sites 2) It feels like a cheap
ploy to offer content and then put up a barrier to accessing it 3)
the way to get users to register is to build trust and a sense of
value in a website

Since no one has brought it up yet... I'll go.

Overall what was expected. The big innovation for me is all this stuff integrated in one simple package. Which is kind of being glossed over in the press. and the price point -very low.
-liked the rebuilt apple apps. calendar & contacts are nicely rethought. lots of new ui in iwork.
-the times demo is just the start of the kind of integrated media experiences you can build.

Expressing levels of achievement/reputation (eBay stars)

We all know eBay stars - different stars denote accumulated reputation
or "feedback score".

I like Ebay's colored star icon system because it's more elegant
and more subtle than, say, a "five star" hotel/restaurant system.
It's more like a karate belt color ladder.

But can levels be expressed in yet subtler ways? What other graphic
elements can be used?

Could use some eyes on this chart

I've been working on this chart for awhile that has to do with my
comic. It supposed to explain some large events that happened in the
story via time travel. I could really use some more sets of eyes on
this thing, because it's driving me crazy!

It's also an exercise in information design for me, so it's not
just for fun. It's my first real attempt at info design in fact.

Anyway, I'd like to see if people can make heads or tails of it
without any explanation from me. I would love any comments, pro or
