Google: Making the Web Beautiful!... or not.

Google Font API allows makers of web pages to use non-standard web fonts to apparently 'make the web beautiful'. Related IxD posts discuss the creative aspect of using a font. However, if you look at the type faces google is offering they look like rats have chewed on the letters even at larger type sizes. This is a usability issue since it makes the text so hard to read.

Fonts like Verdana and Georgia were designed for all the tiny light bulbs that make up a screen and really improve legibility.

Three chances to catch Heather Gold in the Bay Area (August 7-10)

(apologies for repeats and geographically inappropriate distributions...)
BayCHI is pleased to present two events with Heather Gold, a tutorial on August 7 in San Mateo and a presentation on August 10 in Palo Alto. We also recommend Heather's full-day workshop intensive on 8/8 (with a discount for BayCHI members).

I think (especially based on Tamella's response to this) it's a mistake to narrowly frame this as "WFH" - work from home.

It's been years since I've seen a large company that didn't have teams composed of people geographically disbursed across the entire globe. Conference calls, email, chat, all connect Silicon Valley, Boise, Hong Kong, Darmstadt, Singapore, London, Boston

mobile network operators ecare/selfcare-screenshots

Hi,
I'm trying to create a collection of screenshots showing ecare/selfcare - application of diverse mobile network operators (for a best practise study).
Is there a collection like this available already somewhere?
Thank you!
regards,Joerg

Disciplines that "happen"

"Billions of web pages have sprung up since the Web began. And guess what? Information architects played no role in designing most of them. This has been an emergent, bottom-up, grass-roots phenomenon. But every single web site that exists does have an information architecture. They're riddled with labels and taxonomies, vocabularies and metadata, sitemaps and indexes. There are portals linking to portals linking to search engines. Pure navigation. Some is good. Much of it isn't. We can critique it and we can make fun of it, but we can't stop it.
