ADMIN: Yahoo, Hotmail and other webmail users

I have noticed a trend especially of Yahoo e-mail address users that many
people are ending up with bounce-backs to the system and then your
subscriptions being disabled and eventually removed. I have re-enabled all
previously "banned" addresses due to bounce-backs so they can hopefully
receive this message. And I have increased the bounce-back tolerance levels
for the list.

I suggest one of the following course of actions:
1. use a different account entirely
2. check your accounts more often and remove uneeded e-mail.

Some very interesting contributions / reactions in this thread.

Just so that some people don't misunderstand my original intent, I
must admit that I'm a fan of the car as personal item. I just think
that the application of it has drastic implications, especially in
population intensive areas.

I think Peter's comment below on the ACM Statement of Ethics and to
encourage a similar prospect in our field as well is a good one.

Just a note about designing better solutions for certain transportation
problems: The development (and amount of lobbying needed to get states to
allow this vehicle on the sidewalk) of the Segway seems an interesting
example.

emotive interaction design

MIT Media Lab is trying yet again to push the boundaries of human-computer
interaction and this time studying the emotive relationships between man and
machine ... What do people think about this direction of trying to create
emotional relationships thus anthropomorphizing the machine to an "equal" to
the user. Is this an inevitability? or is it truly sci-fi? Are there places
today where this already exists?

Interesting comments by Jennifer regarding the Prius - and a well-written review
to boot. For those interested in following up the car angle, there is an Utne
Reader article in the August 2000 issue - "My mileage can beat your mileage" -
which offers another example of computer-mediated information feedback altering
driving behavior.

There is some kind of interesting game logic at work in this; providing this
kind of real-time feedback about the machine, in some fairly obtrusive way,
somehow provides enough pleasure to alter existing habits and practices.

I suppose this comes down to an ethical argument. As designers should
we be held responsible for the long term results of our designs,
including their social, environmental, and other effect. Or are we only
responsible for the bottom line.

I must say, my opinion on this is we need to embrace the wider
responsibilities or we'll end up with a world no-one wants to live in.
So as other professions have ethical commitments we should too. I know
a few related groups have started on this sort of thing.

I apologise for provoking any infuriation. It is merely what I perceive to
be reality.
However, surely global market forces are creating the environment within
which we can design and create. The global adoption of the design of the
automobile is a good example of this?

Managing Change seems an appropriate title for this discussion.

Does you like commuting? Quite a few people feel the same about typing.

This defence of cars almost infuriates me, but I'll try to be
diplomatic. I can understand the value of an automobile. I can't
understand the cost. Especially in relation to the average global
income. The cost of a bicycle is much more reflective of what it
means to be human.
