To play a key role in designing the user experience across several of our web applications, web sites, and e-learning content products. To work with project managers and the software team to turn requirements into functional specifications. In the context of a typical UX brief, the focus of this role is on interface design and evaluation rather than user research.
Main duties and responsibilities
You will work between the product and project managers and the software team, acting as a bridge between the teams, and working with them on tasks in several areas:
Requirements and specifications
Create detailed functional specifications and interface designs based on high-level requirements and feature descriptions, taking account of limitations and opportunities presented by technical solutions
Create a range of UX deliverables to communicate with and engage internal and external clients, including functional specifications, wireframes, click-throughs, workflow diagrams, scenarios, evaluation reports
Help to collect, analyse and prioritise client requirements alongside project manager and/or product management team
Review and contribute to technical specifications
Lead or assist in user testing and heuristic evaluation of prototypes (paper, static, working) and completed software
Review visual designs from UX/functional perspective and feed back to designer
Review and improve the design of existing key products
Communicate specifications to rest of project team (developers, graphic designers, content writers, testers)
Present specifications and walk-throughs to internal and external clients
Be a key member of discussions around technical limitations and opportunities with the project manager, technical lead, and product management team
Bring a UX perspective to discussions around how we carry forward or redevelop existing products and feature sets in future product development
Contribute to bids (wireframes, product descriptions etc)
Help shape solutions with or in response to clients
Knowledge, experience, and skills required
Minimum 1 to 2 years experience
Relevant qualification (HCI, interaction design, information design, etc) to degree or Masters level, plus industry experience or placement
Understanding of user experience design on complex web applications
Deep understanding of web usability and accessibility
Well-developed skills in one or more wireframing/prototyping tools (Visio preferred)
Exceptional communication and team-working skills
Experience of designing administrative workflows and interfaces for managing large datasets in web applications
Awareness of digital learning pedagogy
Experience of designing products built on open source software
