IxDA Waterloo

Message to the group

IxDA Waterloo (aka uxWaterloo) has continued to grow steadily since our first event in early 2007, bringing together a wide range of people who share a passion for interaction design and user experience. In addition to our status as an IxDA Local Group, we're also an official peer-to-peer group of Communitech, who provides invaluable logistical and promotional support for our activities.

We meet every month, most often on the third Thursday from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. But that's been known to shift around, so check our website for event details. You can also follow us on Twitter at @uxWat.

IxDA Waterloo was formed with two main goals in mind:

  • To provide a peer-support community for practicing designers in the region.
  • To demonstrate for local industry the contributions that designers can make to business success.

Gamification: What it is and when to use it

People are complex, smart, and sometimes extremely stubborn, which may explain why in the last two thousand years, nobody has discovered an easy way to shape how people think and behave. Yet in the digital era, we’re witnessing widespread claims, that the secret to winning friends and influencing people, is to reward them with points and badges.

A magic solution to engagement or a load of hype—in this article, I’m going to discuss gamification, describe it, judge it, address misconceptions, and advocate when it’s a good or bad idea.

Firms that facilitate recruiting of usability test participants in the KW area

I'm new to the KW area. I'm a voice user interface designer.

The company where I work will be engaging in user research (interviews) and usability testing. I'd like to know if anyone knows of a firm tjat facilitates recruiting for such studies in the KW area. It doesn't necessarily have to be local, just have experience recruiting participants in this area.

In the past, elsewhere, I've seen market research firms offer this type of service with a per-participant rate.

Project MORIS: Shown at IxDA Waterloo's April Meeting

Jon and I thought we'd throw the slideshow we presented on the internet for anyone who wanted to take a closer look. Since we didn't get a chance to show you the prototype application, you can actually download it and give it a try too. I whipped up a blog post here summarizing what Project MORIS is all about with links to the application and the presentation.

How Does a New Grad Get Started in UX?

I'm in my last year of Honours Computer Science at Wilfrid Laurier University, and I'm wondering how I can "break into" the UX industry in Waterloo. Most of the job postings I've seen for UX related roles have been for people with at least 3-4 years expierience in the field. How do I get started?
