I would highly recommend 'Defensive Design for the Web' by the fine folks at
37signals.

Ditto. It's the best book out there on how to design for situations where
things go wrong.

You might also hit up the Apple HIG about how to word error messages, and
google "poka-yoke" to learn about the principle of "error-proofing" to start
thinking of ways to apply it in your work.

The more errors you prevent, the fewer error messages you'll need. :) I talk
it about it in my new book - "Designing the Obviuous". There's a whole
chapter on preventing and handling errors. It'll be out next month.
