Hello everyone.

I would be interested in this groups opinions on this article, if of
course you'd be willing to offer up an opinion:

Hi Andrei, enjoyed reading that. I've observed that IAs and developers
tend to, in their language and the way they consider things, treat
"information hierarchies" less as ontological, not navigational. That
is, they often operate by "classifying" things (like old biology!) into
the most pure formal classification they can derive. If you understand
these organizations as supporting goal-directed behavior[1] they can
often be considerably more simple. You don't need to find groupings that
pass a formal test for membership, just groupings that help people
trying to find information contained there.

This shows up, of course, in a lot of places besides web pages. For
example, our desktop has an "Applications" menu, and developers have
been known to expend a rather large amount of energy arguing for greater
and greater refinement in order to avoid misclassifying their
application (you should see the flame wars over whether mathematics
related applications can be put under a "Science" category ;-).

[1] with the caveat that I think a surprisingly lot of computer use is
not "goal directed" per se, but most is
