Rugged/industrial handheld portable input devices?

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone out there might have a line on research or
data involving the effectiveness of portable (handheld) input devices
(keypads, joysticks, trackballs) for use in rugged environments,
often by users wearing thick gloves. Any technology comparisons,
human factors/ergonomics research would be very helpful. The input
device(s) would be used to navigate simple menus.

Thanks for any assistance,
