Senior User Interaction Designer

The University of California, Berkeley, is the preeminent public
university in the country. We’re also one of the leading employers in
the San Francisco Bay Area. We are currently seeking a Senior User
Interaction Designer for the Educational Technology Services division.

UC Berkeley's Educational Technology Services (ETS) is looking for an
energetic and teamwork-focused Senior User Interaction Designer to
play a leadership role on our dynamic Learning Systems Team, and help
develop the next generation of learning and collaboration systems for
the UC Berkeley and Sakai communities.

Interested in community and open source software? Ever wondered how,
as a Designer, you can help those projects build more useful and
usable products for users outside of the development community? UC
Berkeley is a core institution involved in the FLUID project (http://
fluidproject.org) that has critical goals to enable Designers to be
an integrated part of software development in community and open
source projects, as well as enable Developers to make better design
decisions through education and providing them with well thought-out
tools, such as personas, design patterns, and user interface (UI)
components.

ETS is leading UC Berkeley's effort for the FLUID project, as they
have been for the Sakai project (http://sakaiproject.org/), for
several years. We are looking for an individual who is passionate
about good, useful, and usable interaction design, and can help us
change the way people think about design in community source.

Responsibilities:
· Design the user experience for the UC Berkeley Sakai and FLUID
projects developed within the ETS Learning Systems Group, under the
general supervision of the ETS Associate Director for Learning
Systems, and in cohort with other UI team members and Developers

· Serve as one of the key representatives to the Sakai
Consortium and FLUID project for UI design, and participate in
meetings with a multi-institutional team of Software Developers to
plan requirements for the functionality and usability of Sakai and
other community source tools

· Utilize all aspects of user-centered design toward producing
and identifying personas, scenarios, cognitive workflows, heuristic
reviews, user testing, design patterns, and working prototypes

· Apply excellent knowledge of best practice design principles

· Collaborate with users, Instructional Designers, Project
Managers, and Educational Technologists across ETS and the FLUID and
Sakai projects to translate functional requirements into wire frames
and prototypes that Programmers use to build web-based applications

· Specify the user interaction and functional behavior of Sakai
applications and conduct user testing to ensure their functionality

· Engage in each assigned project throughout the development
cycle and use expertise to define which activities in the UX toolkit
are required for each job, working closely with the Project Manager
to ensure a good fit with project goals and timeline

Requirements:
· Bachelor's degree

· Minimum of five years of work experience in software design

· Minimum of three years of experience in developing and
managing client relationships

· Minimum of four years experience in web design and production
and two years of experience with JSP, XSLT, or JSF coding

· Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal, and
facilitation skills

· Ability to communicate abstract design ideas clearly using
storyboards, wire frames, flowcharts, and working prototypes

· Knowledge and expertise with XHTML and CSS

· Knowledge of XML and related implementations, including XML
Schema

· Knowledge and expertise with graphics applications, such as
Adobe Creative Suite, and web design applications, such as Adobe
GoLive, Dreamweaver, and BBEdit

· Knowledge and expertise with diagramming and flowcharting
applications, such as Omnigraffle or Visio

· Understanding of W3C and Section 508 Web Standards, and user-
centered design methodology and usability testing

· Experience in managing the UI development process for assigned
projects and mentoring other UI Designers to help establish which
user-centered design methods are best applied to specific projects

Preferred:
· Master's degree in related field, such as HCI, Design, or
Information Science

· Experience with PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, Flash, or AJAX
