Nesting and trees

We had once proposed a Venn-diagram approach for navigating complex
hierarchies. A related paper by Jitender Sing and me is at

can anybody think of a good example for a interface design which
is in between a list and a tree.

i dont need the folding functionality of a tree, but the nested layout
of it.

anybody got some screenshots or urls of examples which solve
this nice and which are well designed?
