Monochrome display coding

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone could point me towards a good source for
information for transferring color coding information (i.e. Red =
High Level Alert, Yellow = Warning, Green = OK) into grayscale/
monochrome? I need to translate a color alarm interface into
grayscale/monochrome. I've been using shape coding, diagonal lines
and halftones to accomplish the task, but was wondering if there are
any hard sources on the subject.
