Hope your human factors and usability efforts are going
well for UI design. We're putting together a local
event her in Boston to kick-off a campaign to raise
awareness here locally. My view is that we have to
take a more "grass-roots" kind of effort in our local
regions to really begin to attack the public relations
problem that I think exists for our profession.
You might consider trying to rally your local
organizations to do more in terms of "raising
awareness" (e.g., SIGCHI, UPA, HFES, STC, SIGIA, etc.).
We're all interested in talking about this issue, but I
think to do that there needs to be local and national
unity. If you're in the Boston area I really hope you
can attend this Jan. 13th event (you'll get a pointer
to a document on smartgroups shortly). Only costs $5
if you're a local chapter member (local chapters are
kicking in the rest given they feel really strongly
We need to protect our jobs and get new people coming
into the field. Hopefully we'll get a little more media
attention here in Boston (we've go to at least try).
You can do the same in your region.
