Sorry to not be directly helpful, but not *any* designer. We don't all
design in the graphical medium.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your point here, but it's absolutely crucial for
any designer to know the basic components of graphic design. Asking how that
benefits a designer is kind of like asking how knowledge of the strengths
and weaknesses of different building materials benefits an architect.

Your question about how an understanding of the foundations of graphic
design benefits a designer is a really good one. I'm at a loss for how to
articulate an answer though.

Help, someone :-)

All designer might not be designing in the 'graphical medium' ...
What does that mean?

If your design has any 'visual' aspect attached to it, you are designing in the graphical medium. If you do know anything about 'graphic design' you might still intuitively apply some of the field's principles to your design, but your decision might not be well informed.

'Graphic design' is 'visual communication'. There are many principles learnt in 'graphic design' that are needed to deliver clear messages to the users. These principles go beyond choosing colours, pretty typefaces and/or creating cute icons... There are many human factors, psychology, functions + forms, technologies limitations/decisions involved in delivering a 'graphic design' solution.

Knowing the basic principles of graphic design informs you in making the right interaction design, usage flow, workflow decision... in 2D and 3D spaces.
