Dear IxDA constituency,

The IxDA Board is seeking energetic, motivated candidates for several
open Board positions starting in early 2008. The Board comprises nine
volunteers. There are presently four executive positions: President,
Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer, each of whom are elected
from among the Board members. The remaining Board members are
Directors. Each Board member serves for a two-year term, and turnover
is staggered so that 4 or 5 members carry over every year. We
recently instituted a consecutive two-term limit (but after one term
off the Board, an individual is eligible to rejoin).

IxDA Board members have some common responsibilities, including:

* Contributing a minimum of 3 hours (but often 5) per week to
IxDA business
* Attending monthly conference calls
* Participating actively in Board discussions and votes (via
email and online forums)
* Contributing financially to IxDA during fund-raising events
* Attending the annual Board retreat (which may involve expenses
on the order of several hundred dollars but may alternately be paid
by the organization)

Additionally, Board members are expected to chair or join committees
for various initiatives, so they are positioned to become leaders in
the field. Today’s initiatives range from support of local groups to
technology infrastructure development & brand stewardship to
conference planning to...your favorite cause that advances the
profession of interaction design!

We hope you will consider applying for a Board member position! Being
an IxDA Board member is a rewarding experience on many levels.
Extensive networking opportunities abound, and you garner increased
visibility within the community. If you have any questions about the
role, please don't hesitate to write us with your questions at board-
app(at)ixda(dot)org.

If you are interested in applying, please send your responses to all
of the questions below to: board-app(at)ixda(dot)org before December
28, 2007. In this application, we’re looking for some background
information about yourself and your professional history, as well as
learning about your positions regarding IxDA. During the application
process, a committee of Board members will review all submissions.
Final candidates will be chosen by majority vote of the full Board.
(Please note that your application for Board membership is construed
as understanding and acceptance of the Board member responsibilities
listed above.) We intend to invite candidates to join the Board on or
around January 15, 2008, and announce the new Board at our
Interaction 08 conference in Savannah on February 8-10, 2008. If
you're chosen, your presence at this conference is strongly
encouraged (but not mandated) since it will be an invaluable time to
forge connections with the rest of the Board and the organization as
a whole.

Reply soon!!

Cheers,
Liz

Hi Folks,

Board membership is a wonderful opportunity to work with a small
group of passionate people who want to build this community.

The grass roots ethos is central to IxDA. We believe passionately in
community, and believe that our future leaders should come directly
from the community.

Are you ready to roll up your sleeves and build something great? Then
please consider applying for a position on the Board.

The application period will remain open until Dec 28, 2007.

Thanks,
JS

Hello again!

Thank you to those who have already applied. We are still actively seeking YOUR participation in the global organization leadership. Please don't hesitate to apply, before December 28th! In case it wasn%u2019t clear, we will have five open Board positions.

We've also gotten some questions that I wanted to answer for the public forum. I will paraphrase....

%u201CSo what does this %u201CBoard%u201D do, anyways?%u201D

Essentially, the Board manages the business of IxDA, in terms of everything that keeps the organization running. We set the agenda for expenditures, efforts and initiatives. We are some of the active sweat behind the discussion list, as well as coordinating the myriad volunteers who keep the group going in many other ways. The red-hot Interaction conference is going to be a big annual event to keep running. We are now an actively functioning financial entity, with associated responsibilities. IxDA Local Groups have especial need of some shared infrastructure. Going forward, the IxDA Board also will have to be a more public face to industry, press and educational entities.

%u201CWhat are the fixed time commitments?%u201D

The monthly board call is one hour in duration. Committees and task forces sometimes have an additional monthly call. Otherwise, all communication is asynchronous and flexible. We like to respond to each other within a day; deadlines are usually set a couple weeks out. Due to everybody%u2019s other professional & personal commitments, volunteer time expectations are flexible. However, everyone is expected to be passionate and engaged. Because you should be to lead IxDA!

Hope that helps. Later!

Cheers,
Liz
