SMS user interface guidelines/conventions

I've started working on some SMS apps (which sets interaction design back
about 30 years to the command line interface). I'm wondering if there are
guidelines or at least conventions out there for interacting with these
types of applications. My cursory web search didn't turn up much, and
looking at the UIs for some of the more popular apps (frengo, 3jam, 4info…)
didn't really help either.
I'm OK making up my own conventions. But I don't want to do that if there's
already a good enough standard out there that people are used to.
Thanks!

Answering my own question here. The mobile marketing association (MMA) has a
Consumer Best Practices Guidelines PDF. Better than nothing.
