In that NextD interview (,
IDEO CEO Tim Brown basically states that IDEO "[has] more success with
designers who have a more eclectic background and perhaps already had a
career in another field before they enter design."

One could assume that one of those backgrounds could be in programming.

Chris Crawford in The Art of Interactive Design makes the case that all
interaction designers should also be programmers:
