To follow up on Hal's earlier post, I thought this quote particularly
relevant to the discussions here:

"Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like.
People think it's this veneer -- that the designers are handed this box
and told, 'Make it look good!' That's not what we think design is. It's
not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works."

That's a great quote. We're in the middle of a rehab and I am
continually asking myself how people will use the space once we sell the
house off after a couple years. My fiancee's brother thinks of this as
a question of aesthetics and refers to it as interior design but it's
really a matter of usability, and thus, how the space will work for
people. I keep insisting that we will get a better price for the house
if we keep in mind how people will use the rooms in the house rather
than just what is cost effective, which is certainly important.

Case in point: we have a radiator (yes, old house) and we're in the
midst of deciding whether it should go on the wall that is cheapest to
have it moved to which is also a the best spot for an entertainment
center or in a corner near a window where it will be more useful to
combat the cold and use up a space which is otherwise useless. I keep
voting for the corner because we'd have to buy a special radiator cover
to funnel the heat outward if we did indeed put an entertainment center
in the other spot with a radiator meaning there really is no cost
difference.
