Hi there,

I just found out about Pencil, an open-source wireframing tool that is available as Firefox addon (and standalone application). It looks very interesting and I love the fact that it's free. I have already mailed the author asking about possible improvements such as exporting interactive HTML pages or creating automatic annotation documentation. Obviously, I got my inspiration from Axure RP there.

The question which wireframing/prototyping tool is best has already been asked, I am interested if you know about other open-source products such as Pencil.

Sorry for the redundant entry. I have some delay in the discussion
digest mail, so I didn't notice the earlier post...

Here's a quick video I put together of Pencil & DENIM using the open
source wiimote whiteboard hack

Pauric,

That's awsome. How long did it take you to get the wimote hack
working?

Any special issues or is it pretty straight forward. It's on my list
of things to do.

Thanks Greg, I'll highlight the issues and ask an open question.

1) Johnny Lee has two versions of the whiteboard app on his site, I
had to use the older.
2) I'm 'writing' on an painted wall. As such the IR LED would not
reflect off the wall back to the wiimote. I had to modify the general
design of the pen so that the LED pointed back towards the wiimote.
3) the current general design of the IR LED pens has a momentary
switch operated by your finger. I placed the switch at the tip of
the pen.. so when I press down, the LED comes on.

So, the contents of the posted video are just proof of concept. I'm
working on a multitouch navigation of our application's visual
models. I'm not seeing the collaborative whiteboard vision. That
said I'm really interested in people's perspectives on problems
this might solve for designers.

Aside from a few edge cases I dont see how this is any better than
projector/keyboard/mouse....

thanks /pauric

Wow, that looks pretty cool! Regarding whether this holds any added
value to designers, I would say that the border between prototyping
with pen and pencil, or with wireframes on a computer is getting
blurred with your Wiimote app.

For example, I tend to draw things on paper before I wireframe them
in Visio. I do have a Wacom tablet, but I still like the feel of
actual pencil and paper better. Maybe the Wiimote app would be an
interesting alternative.

This remark is from a more sensory perspective. I do share your doubt
is on the social, collaborative aspect of a whiteboard. I don't think
it would be very useful for prototyping, but I guess that is inherent
to the task. With other activities such as card sorting, there might
be more use for this interface.

Pencil is good,
Obviously who use Visio will find it errr!!! tiny but it's good for
basic.
Things like control for modifying progress bar's progress indicator
and same for scroll bar is pretty nicely implemented.

Only this missing is distributing elements vertically or horizontally
like in Photoshop.
