Am I the only one seeing similarities between avatars and Philip
Pullman's concept of "daemons"? Especially in the context of how they
change as you get older...

Gravitar as Totem spirit?

I dunno. I tend to put pictures of my doggies up, but then I'm already older.

Nobody really puts moths up for avatars, do they (like the opening
scene in Golden Compass, the book)?

Yeah, but those are just the folks who haul you out of the Black Star,
after Hiro chops you up with his sword!

Haha, it was called the Black Star. That was a great book.

All I know is I just picked up Bela Tarr's 'Satantango' and I'm in for 7 1/2
hours of weirdness. I found a great little media oddity shop near my work
and am in for a long haul with what they call 'directors wall' has to
offer.
So, is 'His Dark Materials' a must like Bela Tarr's 'Werckmeister
Harmonies'?

I use the same one for the ixda as I do for my work confluence etc..cept
with a white background...

I guess you could enforce them upon birth and take em the logan's run route,
after cycling through all the shades and it starts to blink it's time for
the sandman. I could see it happening. Based on our web analytic profile
cross referenced with your amazon buying habits we've determined your debt
to society has been paid, thank you, goodbye (that same automated woman's
voice that hangs up before I've gotten any answers).

I think the best theoretical work on avatars in mediated social online
contexts is being done by Judith Donath - if you aren't reading her stuff -
you really should because it provides just the sort of theoretical
background that provides a context and vocabulary from which to think about
this. start with this article: "Mediated Faces" http://tinyurl.com/5jkevt

And if you like that - go through the rest of her posted articles on her
site - http://smg.media.mit.edu/people/Judith/
