Car IxD in the media - anyone know where it's being done?
The other day I saw a Ford Focus commercial featuring a User Interface
Designer talking about the UI he designed for the dashboard console.
First of all, I was excited to see IxD getting top billing in a car
commercial. Secondly, I've been interested in Interaction Design for
cars for a long time but have been unable to find out much about where
this kind of design is being done. The commercial I saw painted the
picture that Ford has their own UX team, although my feeling is that a
lot of companies outsource this type of work to design firms. Anyone
out there have experience designing interfaces for automobiles or know
someone who does? I'd appreciate any info on this niche field, as I'd
like to do this kind of work.
Thanks in advance,
- Leon Barnard, Interaction Designer
By the way, I tried to find this commercial online to recall more
about it, but I guess maybe it's not hip enough to get a lot of views
and show up on Google or YouTube. If anyone has the link, I'd like to
watch it again.

Hi Leon,
I've worked in this space and would be happy to chat with you off list. :)

Hi Leon,
Here's a discussion thread from a few months ago on the Ford
commercial. I think there were a couple links to the video:

Also, you might check out Volkswagen's Electronics Research Lab in
Palo Alto, California. Maybe a little engineering-centric but
interesting work. You can dig up a few of their presentations on
Google.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I guess someone else brought this up
earlier this year. Dug through the discussion and found the link to
the commercial.

Just FYI, there will be an article about the Ford Sync interface (in
particular, whether it is less distracting than other earlier systems
and if not, what can be done about it) in the 7.4 issue of User
Experience magazine (from UPA).
The issue should be out in a few weeks. The theme is UX in
transportation--car, plane, ship, subway, bike.
