I actually clicked a Google ad and found this Adobe AIR application designed
for doing quick mockups. It played with it a bit and find it most
intriguing. Does anyone have experience with this product who would like to
share their thoughts?

I use Balsamiq Mockups daily and it's proven to be an invaluable tool
in our design process. We have daily design meetings and the speed
with which I can create design concepts for review has impressed our
PMs.

The creator of Balsamiq, Peldi (his nickname; his actual name escapes
me at the moment), is very responsive to user requests and there's a
growing community where users can submit custom controls for use by
others. And for the price it can't be beat :)

Typically use paper/pen and scans and then custom templates in
Fireworks/InDesign for full wireframe documentation, but for quick
digital work, with *free* tools:

I've been playing with Lovely Charts and it's nice so far:

Pencil Firefox plugin is interesting as well:

Balsamiq has more of an asset library it seems though...

A related thread:

We talked about the pros/cons of sketch-quality designs, which is what
Mockups does best, and specifically talked about Mockups, so it's worth a
read.

I'm continually impressed with Balsamiq mockups. It's a wonderful
tool for not only mock ups but for planning for mock ups as well, eg.
wireframing.

Sign up to the blog and you'll get free templates, the most notable
being the iPhone-centric ones, but there are many others.

I do love Fireworks for all it's stock mac graphics, but it's best
for your 2nd step/pixel perfect renderings. Balsamiq gets your point
across without having to be "final".

Support is from the developer himself, based in Italy, and I and the
department I work in couldn't be happier.

Mary - see my post on Balsamiq (and other tools):

I think Balsamiq is a great tool and use it often.

I use it, and I love it. And yeah, Peldi is very responsive in case of bugs etc. It is definitely a tool you need in your toolbox

Mary,
I've been using the application for a couple of months and I find
it wonderful. It's really quick to use, mockups look incredible but
yet they don't resemble a final design, so the user or client focus
on the UX instead of the look. It's worth every penny.

I've also been using Balsamiq and enjoying it a lot. It's great for
sketching concepts, almost like a whiteboard that can be saved and modified,
and it looks awesome. Axure is my tool of choice for moving from the
Balsamiq sketches into detailed interactive prototypes.

I was using Balsamiq when your message came through to create a toolkit of
UI objects that I then printed on magnetic sheets for a study where some
colleagues will use the parts to create a UI design. The scrolling toolbar
with objects is a little awkward and the palette of attributes in the upper
right can be a bit irritating - it got in my way today when I was creating
my toolkit. The search for icons is a mess with the icons in some haphazard
order.

But, it is OK for $79.

Another tool that I use occasionally is MockUp Screens (
http://www.mockupscreens.com/). It is good for quick sketching and
annotation and also costs $79 for an individual license.

Thanks for your thoughts, everyone. I am impressed at what it does for the
price. I find it awkward to select things, especially for grouping or when
trying to change something from font to back layer.

Balsamic Mockups are excellent for quick mockups and Peldi's response
to queries is way above standard. Users can even help design some of
the features (http://getsatisfaction.com/balsamiq/products/
balsamiq_balsamiq_mockups) or share their mockups (http://
www.mockupstogo.net/). For the price, this is really impressive.
