Hi,
This was announced at IxDA in Vancouver, but many of you weren't there or
were too busy enjoying Will Evans' tweets to notice, so I thought I would
repost.
interactions magazine is proud to offer a discount just for IxDA members,
and you are officially a "member" if you are on this mailing list. You can
subscribe to interactions print and web magazine for $40, which is $15 off
the standard subscription rate, by visiting the following URL: http://campus
.acm.org/interactions/IxDA
You can learn more about interactions online, at
http://interactions.acm.org/
Enjoy :)

I tried signing up but the form quoted a price of $120 and freaked me
out a bit so I didn't bother to continue with the purchase.
I even tried changing the address to a US based one (I'm actually in
London), but it didn't do anything.
Anyone else experienced this?

@ Boon ChewYes, I experienced the same thing...On the app form it says "Special
$40 Annual Subscription Rate for IxDA Members"
But when I submit the form it charges me $120

Question #2, after how much: Is it worth it? Anyone ever read this
magazine? A lot of "interactive"-themed publications seem to be
aimed at engineers or programmers rather than designers/architects.

I'll give my biased viewpoint. I used to get it free as a part of my
ACM SIGCHI membership. I found it worthwhile but difficult when it
first came out. (I even had a piece published in it many years ago.)
Over the years I read it, it slowly morphed into complete uselessness
as the articles got shorter and shorter and the large blank spaces
around the text filled up with artsy swirly things that were unrelated
to the content of the articles. It was kind of sad to see people
trying to explain complex ideas or actual research results in 750
words or less.
I understand that the goal was to make it a more "magazine" like read
and less a "journal" thing. But I found maybe one or two articles per
year that were worth the paper they ended up condensed onto and those
invariably were longer pieces that were allowed to go into depth on
whatever topic the authors addressed.
So, no, I wouldn't pay for it. When I got it for free it invariably
went straight into the recycle bag.
I feel badly saying that because friends and colleagues work(ed) on it
and I respect anyone who works hard at something and produces things
they feel are of value. Perhaps someone else would find it more
valuable than I did.

Hi,
First, the crazy fee thing has been fixed. It's at $40, as it should
be.
Second, to address if it's worth it or not - the magazine has
changed dramatically in the last two years, as Richard Anderson and I
have taken over the editorship. I encourage you to take another look
if you already haven't, and experience the new content that we've
brought. Over the last seven issues - all of which you can browse
online at http://interactions.acm.org/ - we've included content from
IxDA community members like:
Don Norman
Luke Wroblewski
Steve Portigal
Dan Saffer
And we've also included content from:
Carla Diana at Smart
Rachel Hinman at Adaptive Path
Rob Tannen at Bresslergroup
Gretchen Anderson at Lunar
David Bishop at Maya
Laura Seargeant Richardson at frog
Richard Seymour at Seymour Powell
Dave Cronin at Cooper
to name a few.
That's pretty damn design focused to me :)
Additionally, we've done our best to remove the "artsy swirly
things", as I find them just as offensive as you do.
Basically, it's a brand new publication - one that revisits the
vision of its founders (who also happen to be the founders of our
profession, John Rheinfrank and Bill Hefley) yet includes articles
that are relevant to practitioners, now.
I hope you give it a shot. It's well worth it.

I'm confused. Is this a discount above and beyond the standard ACM
member price? I already get it as part of my membership package.

Nope, just for new members.

I'll give it a shot. I agree about the previously decline in design
and article numbers, but I've often used articles in their for some
of my PhD research.

:( I signed up for a subscription mid-January at US$55!
I've read the latest issue and a couple of back-issues and found it
interesting, well worth the $55...

Am I the only one who can't manage to subscribe to Interactions magazine? The subscription system is pretty nightmarish anyway, and I'm now thinking it's actually broken.
I've tried various ways in through the navigation, and now tracked down this old thread on the IXDA discount with the link. I've tried this link but I don't seem to be offered the magazine to subscribe to.... Stuck... Never found it so difficult to give someone my money!!
Bad link. Try this. It worked for me.

OK, I tried to subscribe and although the cost was stated as $40 on the initial page, when I went to payment page it was now $60? Is that a shipping component added because I live in Australia? If so it would be nice that that was indicated as a separate line item.
I live in the US and got the $60 price too (just tried it).
And, you don't get access to the online versions of the articles any more.
