UPA 2009 Workshop on Best Practices of UCD in Agile

*Workshop Date: 8:30a.m. – 5:30p.m. Monday, June 8, 2009*

*Location: *UPA Conference, Portland, Oregon

Agile has been increasingly applied to small and large scale projects in
various companies. With agile, there are unique opportunities (such as more
collaboration) and unique challenges (such as short cycle time). How the
agile team reacts to these will affect the process (and thus the product) in
a positive or negative way, which is why this workshop seeks to bring
together people with different team experience.

There have been several workshops and discussions at various conferences
including CHI 2008, an informal SIG at CHI 2007, a SIG held at UPA 2007 and
a workshop at UPA 2005 to explore success factors, obstacles and solutions
to optimize user-centered designs in agile projects.

Some best practices from prior work include:

- Institute cycle zero/sprint zero to align user experience goals and
plans with business and development goals
- Create a design blue print in cycle zero
- Conduct user research one to two cycles ahead of the product team
- Conduct usability study for the current or the previous iteration
- Minimum user interface specifications

This workshop is a continuation of previous discussions on agile and
user-centered design. The workshop will bring together user experience
professionals and software developers to further verify the success factors
and solutions identified from prior work. It will enable participants to
exchange best practices on how usability professionals in various
organization settings can successfully work with product teams and deliver
high quality products for end users with the agile process. The result of
the workshop will enable us to provide actionable guidelines for user
experience professionals and software developers.

*How can you participate?*
