Microsoft Expressions Color Palette - Background/Foreground Colors

I have a new client that is using the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF)
platform and Microsoft Expression Studio for a new web design of their
current application. The web application is to be used by data entry and
business people for long periods of time every day. They have chosen a MS
Expression template/color palette that is VERY dark, with black and dark
blue backgrounds and white text. A sample screenshot can be viewed at: www.theomandel.com/stuff/ms-expressions-example.gif.
They think it is sexy and contemporary, but from the readability and
usability perspective, I find it very difficult to view, scan and read. I'd
like to back up my perspective with research. Does anyone have research or
case studies on data-entry and frequent-use web applications using dark
background and light text vs. light background and dark text? I've seen many
blogs and designers arguing for creative designs with dark backgrounds and
light text, but little or no usability research.
