Web Semiotics - Signs of the parameters of Web
Semiotics as defined in wikipedia
"Semiotics, also called semiotic studies or semiology, is the study
of sign processes (semiosis), or signification and communication,
signs and symbols, both individually and grouped into sign systems.
It includes the study of how meaning is constructed and
understood."
I always wondered how much is it relevant to the webspace. Many a
times there is a very strong mismatch between the brands portrayal
and the web interface. This i feel has a strong point that
communicates with the user perception. Many a times i felt that this
factor is completely ignored while the creative briefs and the
brainstorming meetings are being done.
I want to start discussion about how at all we can track this
intrinsic effect on the user experience with respect to the Semiotics
of Web. Please share your ideas and also experiences in past that
would be matching with views as supplementary or contrary..

In my opinion its not only relevant but planned or not semiotics are on all interfaces, it might be used on a positive way where the significance of the symbols and signs are used to reinforce the meaning and make the actions in a more intuitive and fluid way or with a negative effect making the total oposite to the point where the semiotics become intrusive.
As for how we can track this effect in IxD, at least in my university (I`m a undergraduate student) we usually recur to etnographic research on the users before the interfaces are developed or brainstormed so we can have a general idea of the enviromental, cognitive and activity variables to use those as a basis to understand which symbols and signs we can use to achieve to our objective
On Brazil there is a important research group about the aplication of
semiotic on IHC, the SERG (the Semiotic Engineering Research
Group)<http://www.serg.inf.puc-rio.br/>.
The group was formed by the teacher and researcher Clarisse de Souza, author
of the book "The Semiotic Engineering of Human-Computer
Interaction<http://www.amazon.com/Semiotic-Engineering-Human-Computer-Interaction-Technology/dp/0262042207/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1246974222&sr=8-1>
".
