I have to do a presentation (at very short notice for a job interview)
on improvements to a search interface for clinical data. Does anybody
know of any useful resources that focus on the design and usability
of search interfaces. Thanks

I found a couple of these patterns helpful. I can speak, in
particular, about the "Deactivate Fields" patterns used in the
context of a report generation user interface. I added several of my
own twists to heighten the usability even more, but it was a nice
start.

I found this article by John Ferrara to be very helpful before I started
working on Search.

He's got a couple others on Boxes & Arrows worth reading as well.

You bet... specifically for search interfaces, you should have a look
at Marti Hearst's book "Search User Interfaces"
http://searchuserinterfaces.com/
Her book is also freely available (electronic) on that website...
which is cool, since it is a subject I am diving into at the moment!
good luck

Here are a three good articles on search from A List Apart:

The first one includes a nice spreadsheet to measure the relevancy
and precision of your top keywords.
