Well, there's a project called "MyLifeBits Project" - being headed by Gordon Bell (yes, great man himself) - funded by Microsoft.
MyLifeBits project aims to put all personal documents and media on-line. For the last few years, the project has been capturing and storing Gordon Bell's articles, books, correspondence (letters and email), CDs, memos, papers, photos, pictures, presentations, home movies, videotaped lectures, and voice recordings. The project is building software to support MyLifeBits, beginning with a MyLifeBits Server that can support capture, storage, and management of personal media, including TV with web enhancement, radio, personal music collections, and home video. Such a project potentially includes many issues, such as security and ensuring that the information will be readable in the future. The user interface issues are many and highly dependent on the various applications needed to make the data valuable to current and future use.
