Metrics for mobile websites/apps
Hi, all,
I'm going to be gathering some metrics for a site meant to be accessed by mobile phone. (Users will follow a link sent to them in a text message or email.) So I need to understand what types of metrics can be collected by a service like Omniture, Webtrends, or Google Analytics specifically for mobile devices. Anyone have any good resources?
As a clarification, I assume that most of the normal metrics (page views, unique visitors, visits, length of visit, etc.) can be collected -- though tell me if I'm wrong (for example, visit length may be calculated differently on an iphone than on a computer). And what about mobile-specific data like:
- device type
- geographic location of mobile device
- browser type, if applicable
- web connection (wireless, 3G, etc.)
- phone carrier
- anything about the mobile plan subscriber
- etc.
Any help you can give me would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Hilary

Hi Hilary,
It might be worthwhile checking out http://www.motally.com. This is a
service specifically for checking mobile analytics, this page will
explain what it can track.

You can use Google analytics to get some mobile analytics, but
nothing too in-depth to the best of my knowledge, just details like
iPhone/Blackberry - bandwidth etc.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Make sure to check out AdMob's analytics product: http://analytics.admob.com/home/
They provide an advertising platform, but I think the analytics
product is free (even if you don't use them for ads). They were
recently bought by Google.

There are now lots of resources out there, including at least one just
launched. Here's a page with many (all?) listed:
http://m-strat.org/mobile-analytics/
The last time I spoke with Omniture (14 months ago), they hadn't yet
realized that mobile might be a little different. That some phones
don't run Javascript; that many users will have images turned off due
to data costs, that cookies don't work on many devices, and that
transcoders and proxies play a big role. That's a long time ago, but
I'd look carefully before spending that kind of money.
