This is the student life section of Cornell website:
http://www.cornell.edu/studentlife/index.cfm

Pretty simple layout. The purpose of the pages on this site is to redirect students to other portal or resources.

we've got a lot of research data from interviews with students and
mental models that have guided various designs of student life
sections. Contact me at david at newcitymedia dot com and I can send
it to you.

Here are a couple of example links:

http://roanoke.edu/Student_Life.htm

Tufts students have created their own student portal which isn't
pretty but it gets the job done! http://www.tuftslife.com/

There's certainly nothing I would call "rules" or standard formats
though. The key is understanding what's most important to YOUR
students.
