Never mind high and low subjectivity - we have some recent data in the UPA
2004 salary survey...

That's actually high for teaching in the uk. The Uk costs twice to
three times as much in everyday life as well, I think you can see the
motivation for frustration here. Hopefully this makes a good impression
on those who are experiencing what is really a more fluid lifestyle and
encourages some understanding.

Thanks

A quick note about UK academic salaries.

1. The variance in academic salaries for comparable posts in different
subjects is *much* less in education than in industry. Salaries depend
on post grades first of all, and only then on fields. In order to
compare apples with apples, compare a Head of IxD Dept. with a Head of
Clinical Psychology Dept., *not* with an IxD practitioner (academic
life has plenty of perks that are not immediately quantifiable in
monetary terms).

2. UK academic salaries are lower that US ones. The expectations and
requirements are different, too. There are (virtually) no tenure or
non-tenure positions in the classic US sense for teaching staff
members (there are for researchers).

3. The highest academic grade is professorship. Heads of Departments
do not have to be professors, unless explicitly specified in the job
description. Their salary, therefore, is more subject to their
academic grade, and less the administrative one.

For a guidance on UK academic salaries, see http://snipurl.com/d0yt
