stereotype vs. persona

Hi everyone,

The recent thread on stereotyping designers made me wonder: In your
experience with creating personas, how similar were they to the
stereotype of the target user? Was your first impression completely
off-base, or was it actually pretty close to the final product?

On the same note, was your *client's* view close, or way off? I'm
curious to see if there was a large difference between the
"stereotyping" by a trained designer and someone who has had little
experience with creating personas.

I realize that there will be quite a bit of self-selection at work
here; if your client was getting it right, they likely wouldn't have
needed your services in the first place! Still, I'm very curious about
this.

Thanks!

Dan
