Motivation to use software

Hy,

I'm writing first time to list. I work to the company which creates electronic document management, groupware and CRM software as interaction designer.
I started to wonder, can I create something motivating to software beside needed functionality and I found out what I can create praise functionality: if user does something first time or when user finishes his/her task or case small flower shows in upper right corner. I think it can create better feelings to users on a "blue" Monday morning :) don’t you? Well I like to make a gift to them, because not all times have been so good and users have'nt changed software when we had a problems :)

So here is a question, people are very different, so maybe someone will get mad of it? There are prox. 3000 users and its grows to prox 5000 next month.

What else motivating can I do beside that software must be bug free and easy to use, and solve right problems? People take it usual, that software does it all and that’s not motivating anymore.

Does someone else have had that kind of questions/problems :)?

Hi Hegle,

Welcome to IxDG!

I think you may find that the kind of functionality
you're describing may provoke different reactions
according to culture, gender, and temperament of
individual users.

The best "motivation" software can provide is functionality
that taps into the broader motivations *of the users*, and
provides something very meaningful to them. To understand
what this might mean for SW functionality, you need to understand
your users more deeply, going beyond the tasks they need to perform,
and touching on the goals they have-- both within the context of
the software, and within the broader context of (in this case)
their work/career (and possibly how they balance such goals with
other goals). What can a groupware/CRM tool do that might help
users advance these goals? Tapping into this sort of user motivation
(what Norman calls "reflective design") is the key (IMO) to making
users fiercely loyal to your products.

My response:

I find your suggestion interesting. While I agree with Robert's comment
that motivation to use software should come from the support of users'
goals software provide, I am reading the book The Media Equation in which
the authors are talking about studies that concluded that people treat
media like real people. One particularly interesting study they made was
to have software praise its users and they demonstrated that even
experienced users felt better about themselves and the computer/software
after being praised.

I see your flower as being a kind of a praise you give your users. Users
can derive satisfaction when they see the software give them feedback that
actions have been completed but the flower could add a nice additional
touch.

Undoubtedly there is something of value there; my point was simply
that the manner in which it is appropriate to deliver praise
and the contexts in which it is appropriate at all are
fairly variable (I can see some issues with delivering praise
in battlefield software, for example), but focusing on well-
understood user goals (in context) is almost invariably
productive.
