Hi all -
Aside from Tufte, does anyone have any resources on chart/table design
that they wouldn't mind sharing? Looking for specific graphic design
guidelines more than guiding principles.
there is a book called the "information design desk reference" that
looks like it might be useful, but I cannot tell much about it from
poking around on the internet. "information visualization: perception
for design" also looks interesting.

Hi Michael,
Two books I've used to good effect are:
1. Information Graphics, A Comprehensive Illustrated Reference (Robert L. Harris)
2. Show Me The Numbers, Designing Tables and Graphs to Enlighten (Stephen Few)
I think that "Show Me.." would be better book for your precise needs. There are a lot of visual design principles in there, mentioned both implicitly and explicitly.

Not sure whether this is what you are looking for:
Elements of Graph Design, Stephen M. Kosslyn
(deals mostly with what graph format to choose to effectively display
the information you are trying to convey, use of lines, colours,
quantitative vs qualitative data, etc)
As with Colin Ware's Perception Design, the focus is more on the
psychological/cognitive principles underlying graph design (i.e "how the
mind and eye work together to receive, interpret and remember
information - from the back of Kosslyn's book)
Not graphic design treatment per se...
