Hello,

I am thinking about going to grad school to study interaction design. I come
from a comp sci background. I am interested to hear your thoughts on
studying interaction design at a master's level - whether it's worth it or
not. For those of you who have been through this, what would you say you
have found most useful. Also suggestions on which schools to look at will be
much appreciated: I am aware of the major ones like Ivrea, MIT's media lab,
CMU's HCI program and the Design school at Stanford.

Thanks for you time.

David,

There was a whole thread a little while back on whether grad school was
worth it or not in general, so I will just refer you back to that on the
pros and cons of grad school in interaction design in general. I think
it may talk about some programs, if not, I am sure the group can come up
with a list.

As to your personal situation, I too came from a CS background. I found
that going to grad school filled in a lot of holes in psychology, user
research techniques, interaction tools, etc. Yeah, you could learn it
from a book, but I think the grad school experience was worth it and the
piece of paper that says "master's in cognitive human factors" (Ohio
State, btw) has let me get the jobs I want instead of being stuck as a
software engineer, even when I told them where my real interests lay.
(I worked for a couple of years before going to grad school).

Hope this helps.

Erika
