The DaVinci Effect Lecture Series
We're very excited to introduce a very unique new lecture series at BEL. In
the Spirit of Carnegie Mellon's DaVinci Effect, professors & distinguished
alumni from Carnegie Mellon will speak on topics that illustrate the magic
of combining arts, humanities, business and technology to make positive
impacts on society.
Carnegie Mellon's "The DaVinci Effect" is the phenomenon that occurs when
the left brain and right brain collide. It is marked by a rapid
proliferation of unique ideas capable of making a significant contribution
to the human condition. During the Renaissance, this phenomenon was most
obviously manifested in an extraordinary individual who was at once
scientist, artist and philosopher.
Mr. Barry Frank, Vice Chairman, IMG
The first speaker for the fall program is Barry Frank, Vice Chair of IMG.
Barry, sports Agent Extraordinaire and Illustrious Alumnus, will talk about
how his Carnegie Mellon experience contributed to the formation of his
fascinating career. In addition, he will give his insight into the ever
changing world of television and its impact on the advertising industry.
Barry Frank has been with IMG since 1970. In 1976 he left IMG to become
President of CBS Sports and returned to IMG in 1978. Mr. Frank has been the
leading sports rights agent and packager of sporting events in this country
since his early days at ABC Sports.
During his time at IMG, he has negotiated some of the most important
contracts in the sports television business, including representing the IOC
in seven Olympic Games, Major League Baseball, the NHL, the NBA, the
International Skating Union, the USTA, and many other sports organizations
in the their television negotiations.
He has also created a number of made-for-television shows including The
Superstars, The Skins Game, The Battle of the Network Stars, World's
Strongest Man, Survival of the Fittest, and American Gladiators.
Mr. Frank represents many of the top television sports broadcasters,
including John Madden, Bob Costas, Jim Nantz, Mike Ditka, and Greg Gumbel to
name a few.
Dr. Reddy's interest in the way humans interact with computers and
artificial intelligence has led to his latest project, which is designed to
help people who are unable to read or write use computers. The event will
showcase his latest development, an Information Appliance for use in rural
environments around the world.
Dr. Minden's novel approach to biochemistry and microbiology has led him to
research cellular development as a possible tool for diagnosis of diseases
and disorders. Dr. Minden will share his research on the development of
fruit fly embryos and how they lead to a better understanding of three
dimensional structures in life forms. This informative lecture promises a
unique insight into the mysteries of life.
Professor Weingart will address up-to-the-minute developments in the area of
cross-functional teams. Corporate project management has evolved into a new
kind of structure that places emphasis on how professionals from different
areas of expertise can openly share their knowledge and resources to develop
and market new products. Professor Weingart's insight will give you a
competitive edge through a greater understanding of how 21st Century
