Hi List

Nielsen's most recent article on useit.com recommends that all non web
documents should be opened in a new window.

I was wondering if anyone had any comments on what he's written? I'm
particularly interested if anyone has any evidence to support or disprove
his assertion?

I'm asking because I'm just about to offer some foreign language content on
our site in PDF format (unfortunately I can't have it converted to html
within the release schedule I have) and want as much as possible to follow
"best practice".

As an aside: does any one know of a tool or server control which could
convert a PDF to html on the fly?

Kind Regards

Matt

Hi Suresh

Thanks for the link, it looks like it's going to do the job nicely... but
crikey isn't the installation process intense; I had to download 7 different
pieces of software from their site!

One global install would have been nice but in absence of that I would have
settled for a list of all the downloads and installation order so I could be
sure I had everything.

Matt

Hi Matt,

I am an industry person who has gone back to teaching at a 4 year
undergraduate university and I can say for certain that I have broken this
rule for my students. At my university we use a course management software
package called ANGEL. This system allows you to give access to all types of
files for students. The problem I have run across is that when students open
non-web files (powerpoint, pdf, etc.) they open within the ANGEL System and
the two main issues that occur are (1) when they want to print it does not
print correctly (2) when they are done with the file they click the X on the
window and the ANGEL system closes. What I have done is taken advantage of
the feature that opens the non-web file in a new window without the ANGEL
system tool bar and this seems to solve the problem.

I always understood design guidelines to be guidelines and if you had a well
documented reason for deviating from them (examples include user error) then
you should.

I hope this helps.

Matthew,

There is http://gobcl.com/ which used to have a free tool for PDF-HTML
and HTML-PDF conversion. They appear to have done away with the online
PDF->HTML tool, which is unfortunate, but you can download the demo
version for their Magellan server, which does the same conversion.
