If there is a critical mass of people who speak French, or German, or
Klingon, or whatever, then clearly the group should look into forming
language-specific lists. But in the meantime, I for one certainly
don't see any harm in people posting non-English messages to the main
mostly-English list. I do think that people who want to do that should
probably indicate in the subject that the post is not in English, as
the recent posters in French have in fact done. Perhaps indicating
this in English ("in French" rather than "en français") would be even
more useful, since some English speakers (especially us Americans) can
be awfully provincial about foreign languages.
I would also like to say that I am disappointed by the tone of the
unnamed individual who sent that email to Juli. I have spent months of
my life regarding the French language as the bane of my existence (I
had to pass a translation exam for my master's degree and I am AWFUL at
languages), but I still think we should absolutely welcome the
internationalization of this group, even at the cost of encountering
the occasional email in French.
Just my opinion.
