The Decade of Interaction Design?

Something to discuss at your next IxD Holiday Party:

Someone (and not an interaction designer) recently said the following
to me:

"The next decade is the decade of interaction design."

I laughed it off, but then I thought, well, maybe she's right. We're
seeing a variety of new interactions possible on the web. Mobile
devices are both more ubiquitous and more powerful. Companies like
Disney are exploring new and different types of interactions in
physical spaces. We've got robots like Roomba invading our homes. I
can't think of a single consumer electronic device that doesn't have
a microprocessor built into anymore. Hell, even toasters are becoming
networked devices ( http://www.theregister.co.uk/2001/06/04/
bread_as_a_display_device/ ).

In any case, it's been a good year for interaction design and we're
just getting warmed up. Thanks for all the discussions this year. I
hope you and yours have a happy holiday season.

See you in 2006!

Dan
